The Government

The Ministry of the Environment has the main responsibility for the Convention on Biological Diversity (National Focal Point )

As an aid to develop policies, the government has established a Scientific Council for Biodiversity with 14 members, with the task of:
  • giving advice to the government in scientific issues concerning biodiversity.
  • keeping track of the national and international development within scientific fields related to biodiversity.
  • participating in activities that follow from obligations under the Convention on Biological Diversity and other biodiversity conventions.

Swedish standpoints concerning CBD-related issues are formed through consultations within and among the Swedish Cabinet Office and the following Ministries:

Ministry of the environment co-ordinates.
Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries is responsible for agriculture, fishery, genetical resources and biosafety.
Ministry of Enterprise, Energy and Communications concerning forestry.
Ministry for Foreign Affairs handles issues concerning development cooperation.
Ministry of Justice concerning the protection of traditional knowledge and genetical resources (patents).
Ministry of Education and Research is involved in several ways.


Authorities

Examples of authorities responsible for several issue areas within the convention :

The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency is working to achieve sustainable development. The government has given us the task of co-ordinating and promoting environmental protection nationally and internationally. Specific CBD-related assignments are :

  • To set up and host a national system (portal on the internet) for information exchange in accordance with the convention. This portal is a co-operation between the agency, the Swedish Biodiversity Centre and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (see further the project group)
  • To provide information required for national reports according to the convention.
  • To host the secretariat of the Scientific Council for Biological Diversity .
  • To be the National Focal Point for the Clearing-House Mechanism of the Convention.

The National Heritage Board is the central authority for the preservation of the cultural heritage and cultural environment. The "cultural environment" is defined as that part of the physical environment which was shaped by previous generations, while the concept of "cultural heritage" also includes inherited traditions and values.

The Swedish Museum of Natural History acts to promote knowledge and research on the Universe and the evolution of life on earth, and to raise the public's interest for these matters. Its area of interest includes the biology of man, the animal kingdom and the vegetable kingdom as well as the natural environment.

The Swedish Biodiversity Centre is the national co-ordinator of research, education, and information regarding the conservation, restoration and sustainable use of biodiversity. The centre is run by Uppsala University and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in co-operation.

International co-operation:

The Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA) is the central authority for development aid and co-operation for capacity-building. In order to increase and focus its efforts related to biodiversity, SIDA has instituted, together with the Swedish Biodiversity Centre, the Swedish International Biodiversity Programme (SwedBio) .

Other important authorities:

The government has pointed out 24 authorities , including The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency and The National Heritage Board, as especially responsible for the achievement of sustainable development. Of particular relevance for biological diversity are those authorities with responsibility for the fulfillment of the environmental quality objectives .

Several authorities are responsible for the regulation of genetical engineering in Sweden.

The County Administrative Boards and the municipalities are regionally and locally responsible for biodiversity.

  Swedish Society for Nature Conservation
The largest nature conservation society.
  Fältbiologerna
Is a youth organization connected to the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation.
  World Wide Fund for Nature WWF - Sweden
Is an independent conservation society working with conservation all over the world, concerning threatened species of animals and plants as well as habitats.
  Greenpeace
An international organization that confronts global environmental degradation and promotes solutions for a world in peace and ecological balance.
  Nordens Ark
The aim of Nordens Ark is to save and preserve threatened species through breeding, reintroduction, research, education and information.
  The Swedish Ass. for Hunting and Wildlife Management
Association of hunters that promotes wildlife management and conservation. Organizes about 200 000 of the 300 000 hunters in Sweden.
  Sportfiskarna
Is promoting good fishing opportunities.
  The Swedish Touring Club
Non-profit organizations with focus on specific groups of organisms or issues:
  Swedish Ornithological Society
National federation for birdwatchers. The web page provides extensive information on birds and research in Sweden.
  Rovdjursföreningen
An organization with the aim that all Swedish predators and birds of prey should be able to attain viable population sizes.
  The National Swedish Herpetological Ass.
Is promoting research on batrachians and reptiles. They also promote the sound and humane capitive breeding of these animals as well as the preservation of their natural habitat.
  The Entomological Society of Sweden
The national federation for people interested in insects. Covers entomological conservation issues.
  The Swedish Botanical Ass.
Society working with botanical issues. Publishes Svensk Botanisk Tidskrift and supports province floras.
  Friends of Bryophytes
Spreads knowledge about Swedens mosses.
 

Swedish Mycological Society
Is focused on mushrooms and their importance in nature.
