The Environmental Objective and alien species

Introduction or transplantation of alien species in Sweden is not considered to be consistent with the objective of achieving an environment with as close to a natural state as possible.

The objective “ Alien species and genetically modified organisms which may threaten the biological diversity are not introduced ” is found in the environmental objectives for:

  • Flourishing lakes and streams
  • Thriving wetlands
  • Sustainable forests
  • A varied agricultural landscape
  • A magnificent mountain environment
  • A diverse plant and animal life . The Center for biological diversity has proposed an objective about alien species “ By the year 2010, Sweden will, through strategies and action plans, thorough laws, a consequent use of risk analysis, environmental monitoring and contingency plans for control measures, eliminate all intentional introduction, spread and transplantation of invasive alien species and genotypes. Introduction pathways for unintentional introductions should be identified and subjected to risk analysis and the most risky pathways will be eliminated. “

The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency is the Swedish national focal point for the Clearing-House Mechanism of the convention.
