The eradication and control of alien species
Alien species which cause harm to biological diversity should be eradicated. If eradication of a species is not possible, measures are needed to limit the species' number, its spread and its harm or damage to the biological diversity.
The plant Giant Hogweed Heracleum mantegazzianum displaces indigenous plants through its dense and high growing stands. The sap of the Giant Hogweed may cause burns on human skin with exposure to sunlight. The Swedish National Board of Agriculture has decided that the Giant hogweed should be eradicated in Sweden.
Hunting is used to limit and prevent damage caused by alien animal species.
The North American mink is a threat to sea birds in coastal and archipelago environments and several projects to control the spread of mink through hunting are in progress in the counties of Northern Uppland and Västerbotten.
Hunting of Canada geese found near fields with unharvested crops or that cause sanitary problems is permitted year round to prevent damages.
