The entry of alien species and populations to Sweden
To prevent the entry of plants, animals, insects or pathogens that may harm the ecosystem, habitats, indigenous species or populations to Sweden, a risk analysis should be made and permission granted by the appropriate authority before import. With the help of a risk analysis, the permission granting authority is able to weigh the usefulness of an organism against the risk that the organism may cause harm to the biological diversity. The risk analysis should include the negative effects the introduced organism may have on the ecosystem, habitats, indigenous species and/or populations, the likelihood that negative effects may result from the introduction and which measures may prevent these effects.
A permit is required from the Swedish Board of Agriculture for the import of plants or plant products and /or animals.
The import of endangered species of plants and animals or animal products is regulated by the CITES Convention and a permit from the Swedish Board of Agriculture is required.
