Sweden has a long and varied coastline streching from the shallow brackish waters of Gulf of Bothnia to the oceanic conditions of Skagerrak. The Baltic sea is the largest body of brackish water in the world, therefore it contains many unique habitats. Most of Swedens 6000 marine animal species and 2000 species of algie are found on the westcoast. Protection of marine biodiversity is to a large extent an international issue, marine species are spread over large areas crossing borders between countries. On the following pages we inform you about the ongoing work to protect marine biodiversity in Sweden and internationally.
